The San Pedro cactus is the name given to the species of the genus Trichocereus (T. pachanoi, T. peruvianus and T. Terscheckii) which comprises about thirty species, mainly found in the Andes. It is a large columnar cactus that grows up to heights of twenty feet. The most desired part of this cactus is only the outer half inch of skin and flesh. Used traditionally by the indians for divinatory purposes, now the skin is sold as a reminder of a dieing culture. Although the skin of this cactus is dried in traditional ovens to maintain the purity of the culture that thrived upon it, the cactus is now sold for identification purposes only.
