Mexican Tarragon 28 gram / 1 oz As a native Marigold of Mexico and Guatemala, T. lucida is well known by the locals as a substitute for Tarragon Artemisia dracunculus, and as such is used in teas, and sometimes added to tobacco Nicotiana rustica as a Huichol smoking mixture.Tagetes and the Zapotecs use it as a primary herb in purification rituals. It grows throughout central and southern Mexico and is popular with the Tarahumara Indians of Chihuahua and is revered by the modern Huichol Indians as a shamanic trance 'Tobacco' who use it in their religious rituals. The herb can be smoked pure, or with Tobacco Nicotiana rusticaorNicotiana tabacum for a mild euphoric high. Its aromatic, anise-flavored leaves are used in seasoning sauces, soups, teas, and vinegars. The dried leaves and flowers make a pleasing, anise-flavored aromatic herbal tea. Mexican Tarragon also is used in herbal vinegars. Dried leaves will retain some of their distinctive sweet aroma, but are not as good as freshly harvested leaf. As with any aromatic herb, add to soups, sauces, chicken dishes, etc. near the end of cooking, or the flavors will be lost to evaporation.
