The seeds of yopo contain mostly DMT, as well as 5-MeO-DMT and sometimes bufotenine. The N-oxides are also present and increase with age. Similarly older samples appear to be low in DMT and 5-MeO-DMT, but high in bufotenine, suggesting some sort of hydrolysis reaction over time. Traces of beta carbolines have been found in the seeds.
Traditional preparation of snuffs often includes the incorporation of limestone powder or wood ash. This causes the alkaloids to become freebases which are much easier to volatilise and absorb. Neoshamans prepare vilca seeds by lightly roasting them in a pan and then peeling the paperfine, dark brown seedcoat off. The inner parts are then ground to a fine powder, combined with a small amount of lime or ash and ground again. This intimate mixture is then often left to sit for a few days as the freebasing reactions is slow to proceed and is accellerated by moisture from the air.
