Mitragyna speciosa, Kratom is a tree growing up to 50 feet tall, native to Thailand and Malaysia and other parts of South east Asia.

The leaves of the tree are traditionally chewed in a "quid" for their effects in parts of Asia, giving the men that chew them high energy so they can work long hours. Kratom effects are described as a combination of narcotic and stimulant. Kratom is used by some as an opium substitute (in tea, smoked, or chewed) and has been found to suppress symptoms of opiate withdrawal. As with opium, it is known for causing constipation, and is sometimes used as a treatment for diarrhea.

Over 25 alkaloids have been isolated from kratom. The most abundant alkaloids consist of three indoles and two oxindoles. The three indoles are mitragynine, paynanthine, and speciogynine - the first two of which appear to be unique to this species. The two oxindoles are mitraphylline and speciofoline. Other alkaloids present include other indoles, and oxindoles such as ajmalicine, corynanthedine, mitraversine, rhychophylline, and stipulatine.
